Acouple weeks ago I was the Guest of the Grand Lodge of Waswhington DC for their annual communication. One of the events was to lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. It was a moving experience.Here is a photo for you to get a better idea.

St Johns Day Celebrated in Minnesota

St Johns Day is a day where Master Masons can renew and strengthen their fraternal ties.It is also a day that is our connection between the past and the future.
This photo is taken in front of the grave of Minnesota's First Most Worshipful Grand Master Elisa Ames in Minneapolis on a cold and windy day.
Afterwards we went to a public house and raised a glass or cup and experienced more Brotherly love.

Greetings Brothers,

This year Sir Winston Churchill Lodge asked me to be involved in a program called Masons in Motion. I was very happy to get involved in this group from the ground floor. Their purpose is to promote a positive life style and to help Brothers prepare and train to run a Marathon. Not just any marathon, but the Twin Cities Marathon, which many say is the most beautiful marathon in the United States. I may be little biased but I couldn’t agree more and I am very moved to be apart of this.

I have not been a “runner” per se, I have never really considered myself to be a runner, much less a marathoner. Never the less, I happily accepted the challenge to train for this event and I will tell you I put forth a great deal of effort, I had lots hours and, yes, lots of pain in the long training regimen. I had to make some lifestyle changes in order to prepare to run 26 miles. It requires a great deal of time to complete all the training runs to build up strength and endurance to complete an event like this. I would run after work or after attending lodge functions. My local police department often saw me running in the wee hours between midnight to three AM, that was the best time for me to find the time to log the training hours I needed.

I’m proud to say that I now consider myself to be Runner.

One day I was running what we call a long training day. I was entering my 18th mile when I heard a pop, and felt a sudden sharp pain in my knee. I didn’t know it then, but I had just torn my meniscus. I was in a considerable amount of pain, and I wound up hobbling home. I tried to work thru the pain and continued to train, but it was really difficult. I finally saw a series of Doctors and was given the bad news that the Twin Cities Marathon was not in my immediate future.

The Brothers of Sir Winton Churchill Lodge took my news as motivation to recruit other runners and volunteers, and l’m proud to say that we were able to not only provide marathon runners for the event, but we were also able to gather many volunteers from other Lodges to help staff one of the water stations along the route. We had a very nice representation from many lodges in the Twin Cities; Braden, Lebanon, Macalester, Hastings, Tussler-Summit, Star in the East, Wayzata, Shakopee, Lake Harriet and Cataract. It wasn’t just brothers, we also had a few wives and kids.....Total of thirty five were on hand to staff the water station with me.

The Masons and OES Women who ran the marathon should be congratulated. They are; Andy Rice, Daniel Akins, Chris Taylor, Roberto Gardiner, Peter Hulbert, Krista Benninger, Leslie Collins and Stoffel Reitsma  It was a wonderful day and the eight listed are all Champions and Victorious in their personal efforts. While I may have been personally sad that I couldn’t participate in the event in the way I wanted too, I was energized and excited to be able to support and encourage my Brothers and Sisters and all the members of our community who ran in the event and displayed a commitment to their own well being. Well done everyone.

What a great time I had with the young men.

Now this sure beats talking about the light bill or snow removal from the parking lot. Are you doing something like this? Why not.

The DeMolay from across the State and their perspective members and the Brothers of Minneapolis #19 and their perspective members ,met for a day of running thru the woods sharing a game of combat and great food.I saw much exchange of information and Brotherly love.

Young Men and old Men love to do the same things.....What a great day!

A tradition was started a few years ago. The Sitting Grand Master and the Past Grand Masters travel to Morgan Minnesota and have lunch with Past Grand Bill Tiffany. Bill is the oldest living Grand Master. He was in office in 1968. During his year we had 268 lodges and well over 60,000 Master Masons. Bill is famous for his saying" We make Masons out of Good Men not members"My how some things don't change.
In contrast during my year there are 160 lodges and barley 15,000 Master Masons. My how things do change.

I attended the Ice Cream social at the Chateau the possible new home of Zuhrah Shrine. It is located at 10715 S Shore Drive in Plymouth Minnesota.
It was a wonderful evening..hot but a great time. There was grilled Hot dogs,Brats, Ribs,and of course ice cream.But what we all really love is the social get together. I love to see everyone and get caught up .

This photo of Tiny the Clown and me( can you pick the real clown? or Cop? ha) was taken very early for as the evening progressed the place was packed.

I took a good look at the new place. I believe that this new faculity will serve us well and allow the Divan to get back to working on membership, program development, and important things that matter and what makes a Shrine Temple Great Again.

The membership will vote at the next stated meeting which I believe will be on August 12th. Its also the night of the Corn feed and grilled steak dinner.

Minnesota River Valley Lodge #6

I was talking to my Brother Rich Hervieux of Minnesota River Valley Lodge a few nights ago.We were just checking in with each other. Rich mentioned he was helping his lodge with their big annual parade and fund raiser of the year. OHHHH we all know that it is the annual Kolacky Days in Montgomery Minnesota. So as Grand Master, I twisted his arm to invite me. So I had to bring my beautiful wife and middle daughter to experience Kolacky days.

The lodge has one of the best food booths of all of Minnesota....period the best! They serve a beautiful pork burger and a ear of corn dripping in real butter (in Minnesota Winters we dream of food like this is heaven sheer .....heaven baby!).

You can see the evidence in my hand and upon my face.....maybe even on my shirt.

Look at those smiles -- isn't that a priceless photo?

Well I'm not like any other Grand Lodge Officer. If I come to your event, I'm washing dishes or whatever it takes to help, and as you can see, today I'm filling balloons -- lots and lots of balloons. I think I filled a couple hundred myself. It was great fun.

One of the newest members James. What a great guy.....He is in the Air Force Reserve and going to College on the GI Bill. It was nice to spend some time and get to know him alittle better.

Hey I'm moving as fast as I can.....ok My daughter was also filling balloons and she was kindly advising or ribbing me I'm maybe not as fast as she was.

This is the Fire Truck owned by the lodge. They use it just for parades like today. The driver is Rich Hervieux. He is the brain child behind the 700 to 1000 balloons we filled and gave away. To children along the parade route.

You want a true awaking experience in this life.....you give a balloon (or hundred) to a young child. When they smile you think the heavens have opened and you are looking upon the face of the Angels.

Don't you want them to come to your town? WELL IF YOU ASK I KNOW THEY WILL.

Now did I tell you about Rich.......well he is my official photographer. He has taken my portraits...all three. His work is absoutely beauitful and he pays attention to every: yes every detail. Rich has been traveling with me across the state and documenting my official duties by taking wonderful photos. He provides beauitful images to those who cannot be with us.

OHHHH well today guess what....the photos you see here were taken by my beauitful wife Jane and myself. Why you ask??? Haaa thats because the Official Photographer Rich Hervieux forgot his camera.

Rich has a heart thats made of GOLD and I could not let him live this one down. Rich and I have many miles yet before us and if he brings his camera I'm sure you'll see the images.

Now what is a parade without a Shriner and a miniature car? Oh gosh a parade be without
them? Here is the HO HO Zuhrah Classic car guys.
These guys are a blast to watch. Some day I'd like to join them.

Ya know if a Cop or a Shriner eats at a place its gotta to be good. This is the food booth of the Minnesota River Valley #6.

Hawaiian Shirt Night

This year theme was Hawaiian Shirt Night,and the meal was the best bar b que around. Provided by The Bones Brothers of Anoka Lodege.
It was truely a night to remember!

Last evening Braden Lodge #168 of St. Paul Minnesota celebrated its 125 Anniversary.It was a evening to remember,and i will for some time.
It started off with a wonderful dinner of: Texas Style Brisket
Carolina Style Coleslaw
Tapenade Tofu
Texas Baked Potato Salad
Cornbread
Cake
It was a very hearty and delicious dinner. It was pretty quiet in the dining room.The only thing you could hear was me scraping my plate. After dinner we went upstairs for a nice well thought out program.
A paper was presented on the history of the lodge by Erick Crail,then an address from a Past Master and the Eminent Grand Commander of Knights Templar Ray Hayward. Next was a Symbolic Reenactment of the signing of the Decaration of Independence. That well thought out piece was written by Matt Gallagher.Then a quick speech by myself.The closing was performed the Tylers Toast lead by John Stitely.

Another nice touch was the lodge had arranged to have everyone who attended to have their photo taken by a professional photographer.He had set upstairs in the library, it was a beauitful setting that was arranged.

It was a great night and I thank you all for letting me share it with you.

Zuhrah goes to Denver with the Grand Master

I was invited by the Minnesota Shrine Temples to join them to attend the 137 Imperial Shrine Session which was held in Denver Colorado. It was my first time Id ever been to a Imperial Session, and didnt want to pass up the opportunity. I had a great advantage over some other Grand Masters. Not only am I a Shriner but I am also a proud member of Zuhrah and my love runs deep for them.So I was not just a tag a long, but an a accepted Brother.

But everyone from Zuhrah was just as special-Ted Martz and his wife Lori (she is a Saint right Ted!),Tony Kroll and Bev,Gary Sibben and his Son Justin, Al Niederhaus,Ross Hjermstad(who got me to sing songs performed by the Monkees---oh gosh) John Hanson, Mike LaVine,Brad Roberts,Jim Burlingame,and Darryl Metzger-who got me to laugh till I couldnt breath sometimes)
Every day we ate together,went to the sessions, talked,smoked Cigars,talked,laughed,they provided so much insite in Shrinedom,did I say talked and laughed?
Their cordial manner and smiles made you feel so welcome and accepted.I am thinking Im going to stay near these folks and Zuhrah for a long time.

The International Peace Garden is 2,339 acres situated on the border between Manitoba and North Dakota, on the longest north-south road in the world and almost at the geographic centre of North America. It was dedicated on July 14, 1932 and has become a living monument symbolizing the two nations living in harmony along the longest unfortified boundary in the world. The Garden is a non-profit organization which is supported by, among others, several fraternal organizations: Freemasons; Order of Eastern Star; Oddfellows; Rebekahs; Daughters of the British Empire (IODE), and Knights of Columbus.

The International Peace Garden Lodge of Freemasons was formed in 1993 with Warrants granted by the Grand Lodges of Manitoba, North Dakota and Minnesota. The Grand Lodge of Saskatchewan became a chartering Grand Lodge in 2000 by motion of the members. Its purpose is "to promote and enhance fraternal relations among Freemasons of North America and to assist in the expansion and maintenance of the International Peace Garden."

Membership in the International Peace Garden Lodge of Freemasons is open to any Master Mason for a once-in-a-lifetime fee of $50.00, providing the Mason is, and remains, in good standing in any jurisdiction in the world which is recognized by the chartering grand jurisdictions. At the time of this writing, total membership is over 835 with members from Canada, the United States, Great Britain, Norway, Australia and the Bahamas.

Membership fees are placed in trust and may not be used for any purpose other than to generate interest which is used to defer operating expenses of the Lodge and other such expenditures as may be approved at the annual communication.

An annual meeting is held at the Peace Garden, usually in the Burdick Center for the Performing Arts, on the Saturday before the second Sunday in August, with arrangements in charge of the Chartering Grand Lodges on a rotating basis. Officers' titles and positions as well as the customs correspond to those of the Chartering Grand Lodge in charge of the arrangements in any given year.

The meeting deals with regular business and includes an inspirational speaker. Following the meeting, Masons and their ladies, usually enjoy some entertainment and a lunch in the Masonic Auditorium. If the meeting is tyled (for Masons only) there is a program arranged for the ladies.

The $775,000.00 Masonic Auditorium was dedicated in 1981 as a centennial project of the 20,000 Masons of Manitoba and North Dakota. It is built in the shape of the Square and Compasses and has seating for 2,000. It is the only building of its kind in the world.

As Grand Master I will be co-leading with the Worthly Grand Matron Doris Korthof the Minnesota Eastern Star a group to the Peace Garden.We will be leaving by motor Coach and staying in a hotel close by.There are a few spaces left,but you have to have a passport.

The Faithful Few

The ones that I would mention, are the Always Faithful Few.

They fill the vacant offices, as they are always on the spot.
No matter what the weather, though it may be awful hot;
It may be dark and rainy, but they are tried and true;
The ones that you rely on are the Always Faithful Few.

There's lots of worthy members, who will come when in the mood;
When everything's convenient, they can do a little good;
They're a factor in the order, and necessary too,
But the ones who never fail us are the Always Faithful Few.

If it were not for these faithful, whose shoulders at the wheel,
Keep the order moving onward, without a halt or reel;
What woud be the fate of Orders, who have so much to do,
They surely would go under, but for the Faithful Few.

I attended the 122nd Annual Communication of the Grand Lodge of North Dakota. It was held on June 17th and 18th in Bimarck North Dakota.

Out going M.W.Brian Burkett did a great job as Grand Master this past year.He had a diffcult job traveling this winter in the middle of Winter blizzards, and having to work long hard hours during this Springs flooding.

In coming Grand Master Lon Kvasager is going to have a outstanding year as well.Im the lucky one this year.For Lons paths and mine will cross many times this year. He is one of the guys I love to just sit and talk and laugh.This is very unusual. Normally contact with other Grand Masters who you have become friends is usually reserved with phone calls and text messaging.
PERFECT EXAMPLE The Grand Master of Nebraska watches the weather channel and he text messages me every time it snows in minnesota........
North Dakota is a place I love to visit and a great place to be a Brother.

July 4th is the day we celebrate our Nations birthday, but June 14th is the day we celebrate our Nations Flag.
Ive included the Presidents Proclamation only because it does a nice job in describing what Flag Day is really about.So on the 14th I ask that you take a minute and gaze upon our Nations symbol and give it a thought,a word of thanks or even a prayer. That our flag may wave in freedom for many years to come.

Presidential Proclamation--Flag Day and National Flag Week
On June 14, 1777, the Second Constitutional Congress adopted a flag with thirteen stripes and thirteen stars to represent our Nation, one star for each of our founding colonies. The stars were set upon a blue field, in the words of the Congress's resolution, "representing a new constellation" in the night sky. What was then a fledgling democracy has flourished and expanded, as we constantly strive toward a more perfect Union.
Through the successes and struggles we have faced, the American flag has been ever present. It has flown on our ships and military bases around the world as we continue to defend liberty and democracy abroad. It has been raised in yards and on porches across America on days of celebration, and as a sign of our shared heritage. And it is lowered on days of remembrance to honor fallen service members and public servants; or when tragedy strikes and we join together in mourning. What Are Policemen Made Of? By Paul Harvey

A Policeman is a composite of what all men are, mingling of a saint and sinner, dust and deity.
Gulled statistics wave the fan over the stinkers, underscore instances of dishonesty and brutality because they are "new". What they really mean is that they are exceptional, unusual, not commonplace.
Buried under the frost is the fact: Less than one-half of one percent of policemen misfit the uniform. That's a better average than you'd find among clergy!
What is a policeman made of? He, of all men, is once the most needed and the most unwanted. He's a strangely nameless creature who is "sir" to his face and "fuzz" to his back
He must be such a diplomat that he can settle differences between individuals so that each will think he won.
But...If the policeman is neat, he's conceited; if he's careless, he's a bum. If he's pleasant, he's flirting;if not, he's a grouch.
He must make an instant decision which would require months for a lawyer to make.
But...If he hurries, he's careless; if he's deliberate, he's lazy. He must be first to an accident and infallible with his diagnosis. He must be able to start breathing, stop bleeding, tie splints and, above all, be sure the victim goes home without a limp. Or expect to be sued.
The police officer must know every gun, draw on the run, and hit where it doesn't hurt.He must be able to whip two men twice his size and half his age without damaging his uniform and without being "brutal". If you hit him, he's a coward. If he hits you, he's a bully.
A policeman must know everything-and not tell. He must know where all the sin is and not partake.
A policeman must, from a single strand of hair, be able to describe the crime, the weapon and the criminal- and tell you where the criminal is hiding.
But...If he catches the criminal, he's lucky; if he doesn't, he's a dunce. If he gets promoted, he has political pull; if he doesn't, he's a dullard. The policeman must chase a bum lead to a dead-end, stake out ten nights to tag one witness who saw it happen-but refused to remember.
The policeman must be a minister, a social worker, a diplomat, a tough guy and a gentleman.
And, of course, he'd have to be genius....For he will have to feed a family on a policeman's salary.

Its Police Week so I thought this would be fitting since I am one. But more importantly I do this to remember those who I have served with for over 32 years.Many are no longer with us on this earth.And for the guys I work with today.

This year, the Lodge is visiting Minnesota. We've planned an exceptional series of events with them for the benefit of all Masons. Highlights include a St. Croix River sunset boat cruise, a barbeque dinner for lodge members at the home of MWB Andrew Rice, and a much-anticipated Festive Board to be held at the inneapolis Club, following the first-ever exemplification of the English Masonic Ritual, "Emulation Working" in Minnesota, at the Minneapolis Scottish Rite Temple. A question-and-answer discussion will follow the degree exemplification, along with coffee, tea and a selection of English biscuits.

Some events will require a fee to cover expenses, which we have tried to keep as low as possible. The brethren of Sir Winston Churchill Lodge invite any regular Masons to join with us in this 4-day celebration of Masonic brotherhood, and hope you will join us in welcoming up to forty traveling English Masons who will be here June 2-5. New Grand Master of Minnesota

I was gazing out the window the other day watching the snowflakes falling upon the first new flowers of Spring. It reminded of a poem I learned from grade school.”Spring is a time of rebirth and renewal. The snows of winter melt away, flowers bloom, and the world seems new again.
What I appreciate about Spring is that explosion of new growth. The trees and plants and the air is filled with new energy. With the display of beauty that is better than I can remember.
So what does Spring have to do with Freemasonry? I think that we can learn from Mother Nature and use the time to give birth to new and better ways of doing things. Much like in the fall when trees drop their leaves and then are re-born in the spring.
And just like the Spring. Minnesota Freemasonry is experiencing new growth in new leadership, and many new programs that will be rolling out. While renewing many existing established one .
Just two weeks have passed since I took the obligation to serve as your Grand Master. I would like to give you an outline here of what you may expect to see in the next few week. The below is a part of my acceptance speech.

At this time I’m going to give you an outline -- in a nutshell -- of what I envision for the Craft for the upcoming year.
I believe that the Grand Master and Grand Lodge must lead by example…. to demonstrate its relevancy to our lodges and thereby inspire the lodges to be even more relevant to their members and community.
Some have remarked, with the best of intentions, that I’m a shadow of my former self…
Last year on April 8th, 2010 I applied my Masonic teachings and started my diet-Today I stand in front of you 100 pounds lighter.
I wanted to be prepared for the race ahead of me. I want to show you, that you up and coming leaders must prepare for the race ahead of you, as you plan for your coming year, or you masters, as you race to complete yours.
Many changes are ahead:
This year we will be breaking new ground in Minnesota by establishing pilot projects that will bring greater visibility to the Masonic lodges in their communities all across the state of Minnesota.
We are going to address some of our old problems using new ideas while holding on to our valued traditions.
These projects are based on other programs that have had great success in other Grand Lodges and by a small number of successful Minnesota Lodges.
Number #1
2011 will be a pilot year for the Lodge Open House Program where at least twenty specifically selected lodges will be asked to participate in holding events spanning three months. This will include Lodge Re-union, Open Houses, and New Member Nights. Lessons of learned successes and challenges experienced this first year will be collected for program improvement going forward.
This three part plan will help the local lodge become more relevant to its members, gain positive exposure in their community and provide new opportunities to obtain new members.
Number #2
It is the solemn duty of the Grand Master to promote the image of Minnesota Freemasonry, and part of that job is to support Minnesota Masonic Charities. Therefore, I will be leading a team called “Masons in Motion” in running the Twin Cities Marathon while using that race to raise money for Masonic Charities. Supporting me in this venture and highly visible around here this weekend are the brethren of one of my lodges, Sir Winston Churchill #351.
This event supports those who support us, in order to give back, and make Minnesota Masonic Charities even stronger for future generations. The goal for the Masons In Motion project is to encourage pledges as individuals or lodges. A letter was mailed to all lodges several weeks ago, encouraging participation, and to attempt to gain a pledge from every lodge in the state. We also hope to earn pledges from as many individuals as possible. This pledge can be large or small.

Training like this is…, well…, I thought losing weight was tough. Let’s just say that marathon runners are a breed apart. Already, the team has added five other runners.
I need your help… I’ll be 57 years old just days after the Marathon. This time last year I couldn't’t run across the street not to mention 26 miles. Now, I come home from work and put my shoes on and out the door I go. I run for three to five miles to train for the day… its exhausting work.
Run with me. By that, I mean, step up for your lodges, and pitch in. Sure, you can run the race. But, in a larger sense, step up and accept my challenge to take your game up a notch, and make this a great year for your lodge and your community. And brothers, dig deep and consider a donation to Charities as part of our Masons in Motion project.
It is important for you to know that 100 % of the funds you pledge goes directly to Charities. Neither my race team, nor Sir Winston Churchill retains any of the funds in this effort.
I hope to see you all at the finish line.

Now if that’s not enough pain and suffering how about this?
Number Three
I have always encouraged lodges to support those charities that help their local communities. One such charity is Special Olympics. Special Olympics Minnesota is founded on the belief that people with intellectual disabilities can, with proper instruction and encouragement, learn, enjoy and benefit from participation in individual and team sports.
The Minnesota Special Olympics is one of those organizations who can help make a difference in people’s lives.
I will lead teams of Local Lodges across the state to participate in the annual Polar Bear Plunge, benefit ting the Special Olympics.
For some reason it was chillier this year than it had been in previous years…
Again, we will jump into frozen lakes in the middle of a Minnesota Winter to gain positive awareness of Minnesota Freemasonry while raising money for children with disabilities. Those of you that have jumped with me before will be able to attest to that this is one of those experiences that is filled with Brotherly Love.

These are just a few of the events that are going to be going on in the next few months. If you want to hear a lot more stick around for the installation.
Let’s briefly talk about appointments:
Worshipful Brother Ed Halpaus, will you please rise?
My plan is to appoint Worshipful Brother Ed Halpaus as the Junior Grand Warden to the progressive line. If tradition prevails he will be Minnesota’s Grand Master in 2018. As you know, Brother Ed is a tireless worker of the Craft. He works four to eight hours a day to provide Masonic Enlightenment as the Grand Lodge LEO. His work is published and read worldwide. He brings much credit to Minnesota Freemasonry.
Ed will never say that a project is too big or will take too much time.
Ed’s Masonic resume and credentials provided him with the tool box of knowledge to get the job done.
He is driven for his love and passion for the Craft.
Ed is ready for the challenge of guiding the Grand Lodge into the future.
I am proud to call him my friend and Brother.
There are a number of other important and strategic appointments that I am planning to make. I will reveal those latter this afternoon.
My theme for this year will be “Freemasonry A Way of Life.” I will be talking about this theme throughout the year, and celebrating the ideals and teaching that sets Freemasons apart from the rest.
The blueprints are now complete and will be placed upon the trestle board. Now is the time for us to work together and overcome some of the challenges that we face to ensure the future of Freemasonry in Minnesota.
And last
It is my wish that you be blessed with good health and accomplishments now and in the days to come.
I pray that our Great Architect will watch over us but more especially our men and women in our Armed Forces. May he bless them and keep them safe.
Together, we can fight the good fight. Together, we will win the race.

Worlds Oldest FreeMason dies at 114

The Worlds oldest man Walter Breuning of Great Falls Montana has layed down his working tool and walked out the West gate at 114 years.

He passed away of natural causes in a Great Falls hospital. He has not been feeling good most of April.

Walter was born in Melrose Minnesota on September 21 1886.

Walter has requested no funeral service. He asked that donations be made to the Shriner's Hospital and to the Scottish Rite Language Disorder Center.

I know Walter will be missed by his Brothers. I was at a few Masonic gatherings and heard stories about Walter from a few Past Grand Masters that knew him.

Great Idea to Raise Money fror the Shrine Hospitals

The Long and the Short of It – Shrine Sporting Clays Association Going on its fifth year, the Yaarab Shriners out of Georgia has taken their skill and passion and made it into a local and national event to support and raise monies for The Shrine Hospitals for Children. Clay shooting has become a popular sport and past time, so it was an easy decision to tap into their interests to raise monies for the Shriners Children Hospitals and reach out to potential members for Yaarab Shrine to bring greater awareness of the organization and the Shrine Hospitals for Children. The success of Shrine Sporting Clay Association has attracted national attention and others look to their organization for ways of making their own events successful. Team Minnesota Masons Freezin’ For A Reason

Minnesota Mason (Lake Calhoun, March 5, 2011)

Team Minnesota Masons, spearheaded by Deputy Grand Master Tom Hendrickson rallied the troops and made a splash of a team consisting of 13 Masons from different lodges throughout the Minneapolis Metro area, raising approximately $6,000.00 for the Special Olympics of Minnesota Polar Bear Plunge, March 5th at Lake Calhoun.

After a quick briefing of temperatures, precise cannon ball or belly flop instruction, Team Minnesota Masons took to the plunge line to attend the task at hand. With determined eyes and quick like strides, Team Minnesota Masons made their way to the plunge hole.

The men jumped with precision and grace into Lake Calhoun. Some jumpers tried to maintain their smile upon exiting the jump hole, however it was later admitted it was too cold to hide the simple fact it was freezing cold.

Team Minnesota Masons was recognized and received lots of cheers and other encouragements from the crowds, often receiving shout outs and posing for a few pictures from enthusiastic and excited spectators.

After a quick warm up in the provided hot tubs, Team Minnesota Masons and friends met at Bunnies Bar and Grill for burgers and to plunge reminisce.

This is the 14th year of the Polar Bear Plunge. Monies raised goes to the Special Olympics of Minnesota bringing together children and adults with intellectual disabilities and uniting them in various sporting events based on skill level.

Masons in Motion-running Twin Cities Marathon

Masons In Motion is about giving back. It’s about being a part of something bigger than ourselves. It's about uniting the Fraternity to support those who support us. It’s about supporting Minnesota Masonic Charities. “Don’t just be a Mason, be a Mason In Motion.”

Masons In Motion and the 2011 Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon
Should tradition prevail, RWB Tom Hendrickson will become Grand Master of Masons in MN this coming April. One of his goals is to complete the 30th Annual 2011 Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon on October 2, using the event to promote the Craft. Supporting him, Sir Winston Churchill Lodge #351 formed Masons In Motion.

Goals of Masons In Motion
Masons In Motion has several important goals. The first goal is to raise money for charity with all proceeds to go to support the work of Minnesota Masonic Charities.
Minnesota Masonic Charities (MMC) is the philanthropy of Minnesota Masons and Stars which fully represents the generosity of the Minnesota Masonic Family. Whether it is support for the Masonic Cancer Center in its efforts to find a cure, the care of our seniors in the historic tradition of two Masonic Homes, Bloomington and North Ridge, the pledge to the future by providing scholarships for Minnesota students, or the partnership with Lodges and Chapters in matching grants for programs in their communities, MMC offers a capable, committed and compassionate foundation for the many charitable endeavors of Minnesota Masonry.

The second, and perhaps most important is to help unite the fraternity and give back. On behalf of RWB Tom Hendrickson, Masons In Motion is asking that each body within the Minnesota Masonic Family make a pledge to this great philanthropy of whatever sum you feel is appropriate.

How can you be a member of Masons In Motion?
You can participate in a number of ways.

Lodge or Chapter Support

As a Lodge or Chapter may make a Pledge to support Team Masons In Motion. Our goal, to support RWB Tom Hendrickson, is to recruit 100% participation of every Lodge and Chapter in the state. The amount of your pledge is secondary to your participation. The dollar amount is not the goal. Participation is.
Individual Support
As a member of the fraternity, you are encouraged to make a Pledge to support either Team Masons In Motion and/or an individual Team Runner.

Volunteer
We have a number of opportunities for you to be able to get involved and volunteer.

Cheer

Run
If you are a member of the Masonic Fraternity and would like to run the marathon with RWB Tom Hendrickson and Team Masons In Motion you are welcome to join them in this endeavor.
Presently the running team consists of 6 Master Masons who have committed to run. They include: RWB Tom Hendrickson; MWB Andy Rice, WM Sir Winston Churchill Lodge #351; WB Dan Akins, SW Sir Winston Churchill Lodge #351; Bro. Bob Davis, JW Sir Winston Churchill Lodge #351; Bro. Chris Taylor Sir Winston Churchill Lodge #351; and Sean Gardiner, WM Dakota Lodge #7. While presently the majority of runners are from Sir Winston Churchill Lodge #351.
To run on the team, two rules will be in effect. The first rule is you must wear the Masons In Motion Team Uniform. The second rule is that the Grand Master (should tradition prevail) must finish before all other team runners. This will not be a run for time, but a run for the fraternity, with RWB Tom Hendrickson leading the way.

Team Runs
The Running Team has already begun training for the event. We meet at least once per month to run together, followed by coffee at Caribou. Come and join us!

Happy Birthday Brother George Washington!

While researching information regarding Brother George Washington, an interesting fact is that he was born in accordance of the Julian calendar, which was the calendar used at the time of his birth, February 11, 1731. According to the Gregorian calendar, adopted in 1752, George Washington’s birth date was February 22, 1732.

Brother George Washington was an honored and respected Mason. At the age of 20, Washington was initiated as Apprentice on November 4, 1752 in Fredericksburg, VA. It was with his compassionate nature, appreciation and understanding of the Masonic system that he flourished, and on August 4, 1754 George Washington was raised to Master Mason. As his character suggests he was a ‘Just and Upright Mason’.
In his Presidential and Masonic career he presided in the cornerstone ceremony for the US Capitol in 1793.

George Washington was noted as a noble opponent, as well as a Brother. This was witnessed while a British traveling Lodge fell into the hands of American forces after being defeated; chests belonging to the British Lodge with contents of jewels and other treasures were ultimately surrounded to the American forces. Upon learning this, George Washington with his elegance and honor demanded the contents to be returned to the Lodge and regiment. With this noble act he gained much respect from the opponents.

On December 18, 1799 George Washington was laid to rest and buried at Mt. Vernon with Masonic rites.

One January 15th, 2012 The Grand Lodge of Minnesota held its annual One Day to Masonry at the Scottish Rite Building in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I knew it was going to be a good day when I arrived. The parking lot was full.The closest parking spot I could find was six blocks away.

The 58 Candidates enjoyed a full day of the finest Masonic Degree work in all of Minnesota. Not only the Candidates enjoyed the work but so did the 220 side liners. Here it is becoming popular for the Brothers to come and see the degrees and have lunch and renew friendships.

You hear alot of talk about those who participate in the One day Class vs those who participate in the more traditional routes. So I have some numbers for you to look at and you can decide for your self.

Since October 23, 1998 we have raised 1242 Masons in the One Day Classes. Today were still have 886 members, 36 have died, 320 have withdrawn or have been dropped due to N.P.D.

During the exact same time frame we raised in the traditional method 4523 Masons there are today 3522 members. You do the math.

I was not in favor of the One Day to Masonry when it first started.But I have come to the conclusion that there isn't any difference in the route you select. It is up to the individual and the lodge mentoring on the type and quality of Mason the Candiate becomes.

Here we have Custodians of the Ritual work, Grand Lodge Officers, a lot of Past Masters who were all One Day Candidates.

I am very proud of the quality of the work, the site that we hold the event and right down to the lunch we provide. So I invite you if you have an opportunity to come and spend the day and I think you ll enjoy it.

Happy Birthday Robert Burns!

Brother Robert Burns is considered Scotland’s most noted poet and lyrists figure in the 18th century, with works including A Red, Red Rose, A Man’s A Man For A’ That,
To A Louse, Ae Fond Kiss and Auld Lang Syne.

On July 4, 1781 when Robert was 22, he was initiated into St. David Tarbolton Masonic Lodge, where he was passed and raised on October 1, 1781; however the actual location of the Temple where Robert was made a Freemason is unknown.

Burns was very active in his Lodge; in 1784 he attended all nine meetings, passed and raised brethren, and over saw and attended to most Lodge business. In 1785 Burns was appointed Depute Master, again being very committed in his duties within the Lodge. His passion for Masonry enabled him to initiate, pass and raise his brother Gilbert in 1788.

Burns was highly respected by Grand Master and Grand Lodge of Scotland, and in 1787 was named Poet Laureate of the Lodge. During this time he visited lodges in Ayrshire and became an honorary member at most lodges.

After his passing, Burns’ friends held the first Burns supper in Ayrshire to gather, remember and celebrate Robert. The suppers are more common in the Scotland and Northern Ireland and most notably in Scottish Societies and those familiar with Burns’ literary works.
The supper is usually held around the 25th of January in celebration to Robert’s birthday. Depending on the suppers, they can either be formal or informal with an underlying theme of haggis, Scotch whisky and works of Burns’ recited.

A typical formal event is hosted by organizations (Freemasons or other affiliations) and follows a format where guests gather for social hour and are welcomed by the host. After the welcome speech, many wait with anticipation for the Entrance of the Haggis, followed by the dinner.

Typically Burns’ Dinner starts off with Cock A Leekie Soup, essentially an American version of chicken and barley soup with leeks thrown into the mix.

Haggis is served with Tatties and Neeps as sides. Tatties, or potatoes follows the recipe similar to the American version of mashed potatoes. Neeps rounds out the dish by adding roughage to the plate and adding a creaminess texture of the Tatties. The Neeps, or turnips are prepared in similar fashion as a side of sauté spinach.

If one saved enough room for dessert, a specialty severed on Burns’ night would include Tipsy Laird Triffle. It’s appropriately named due to the main ingredients-whisky and sherry. The layering of sponge cake, raspberry preserves, whisky, sherry, and cream and topped, with a layering of bananas and almonds lends one to think of the similar dish Sherry Triffle.

During this time and other small intermissions of the evening, toasts will be given, including the Immortal Memory to Robert Burns, and appreciation toasts to the Lassies if present. Burns’ works are recited and reflected on, and a final closing to the evening includes singing Auld Lang Syne.

Happy New Year and to Auld Land Syne

Have you ever been at a New Year's celebration and at the stroke of midnight the party goers break out in singing Auld Lang Syne? Have you notice that many didn't know the words to the song and even fewer people knew what they mean?

Poet/Lyricist Brother Robert Burns modified a traditional Scottish folk song that became an internationally known song in 1788.

The lyrics of Auld Lang Syne consist of five verses. The words literally translate from Old Scottish meaning 'Old Long Ago'. I think its about reminiscing or reflecting about old times. In Minnesota I think it's very fitting that we usually will conclude a Table Lodge with all participants in holding hands and singing a few verses. I'm always touched by the lyrics in the song "We'll take a cup of kindness yet." To me that symbolizes our current friendship.

I am always touched as I gaze into the faces of all my Brothers and friends as we sing that phrase.

So on the New Years Eve I raise my glass and think of you. Happy New Year Brother!

Happy St. John the Evangelist Day

In a few hours here in Minnesota and the Northern Latitudes we are entering the dark days of Winter. December 21st, 2010 is the day with the least amount of daylight. This day is called the Winter Solstice also known as the First Day of Winter.

For us as Free Masons the Winter Solstice is known to us as St.John the Evangelist Day. It is a day that we all celebrate world wide.

Early this morning we also are going to experience an Lunar Eclipse. A Lunar Eclipse is when the Earth passes between the Sun and Moon. When this occurs the Earths shadow covers all or part of the moon.

Tonite is going to be an extreely rare moment. For the last time the Lunar Eclipse occurred on the Winter Solstice was 12-21-1632 or 372 years ago.

Watching the eclipse is perfectly safe . You dont need any special equipment or telescopes.
Here in Minnesota Mother Nature is finishing up with another snow strom so I will not be able to view it, but I encourage you to go out and gaze to the heavens and enjoy the sights.......
and take a moment to remember all those Free Masons where so ever disbursed.

Happy Tea Party Free Masons!

Today is a day for all Free Masons to celebrate....The Boston Tea Party. I have found an article by Brother Edward Cair of California. I found this to be a very enjoyable story. I hope you too will raise your cup in honor of this great American moment and I consider today a Masonic day.If you see me be sure to stop me and Ill buy you a cup of coffee and we can enjoy the moment together.

Amazingly, no one knew who dumped the tea!
Two thousand people stood on Griffin’s Wharf and watched the Boston Tea Party. The crowd was silent as sixty men dumped 340 chests of tea into the salt water. Some of them put lampblack or paint on their faces. Some came wrapped in blankets. They called themselves “Mohawks”. (Most of the participants actually were not disguised.)

The crews of the tea ships were ordered below. No resistance was made. Some of the crew even helped unload the tea.

The Governor’s Cadet Corps were guarding the tea ships. They never lifted a musket and stood away from the crowd because these people had not forgot-ten the Boston Massacre.

It took three hours and all done in silence and order. No damage was done to the ships. The decks were swept clean. No “Mohawk” would keep any of the tea.

The three tea ships were in range of a 60-gun British warship. The entire Tea Party could have been blown out of the water. It would have meant firing on the crowd as well as the people in buildings near the wharf. No shot was fired.

The British Admiral watched from the upstairs window of a house nearby. When the “Mohawks” had completed their task they marched under his window. The Admiral opened the window and shouted, “Tomorrow you’ll still have to pay the piper! “.

No trial of the “Mohawks” was ever made in Boston. One man in the crowd said he would be a witness provided they would take him to London 3,000 miles away. He was never taken to London. Governor Hutchinson said that if he held a trial in Boston the members of the jury would turn out to be the “Mohawks” or their friends.

After the Tea Party, Governor Hutchinson himself was withdrawn to London “for consulta-tion”. He never returned. Instead the King and Ministry sent General Gage as a new military Gover-nor and gave him full discretion to find evidence for a trial of those responsible for the Boston Tea Party. Parliament closed down the port of Boston, cut off the trade, and sent in 10,000 troops to oc-cupy a town of 20,000 people. The new military Governor with his full discretion never found suf-ficient evidence in Boston and the Ministers to the King in London never pressed charges.

Benjamin Franklin, a Grand Master of Masons in Pennsylvania, was in London at the time. He called the Boston Tea Party “an act of violent in-justice”. A group of London merchants wanted to pay twice the value of the tea in order to keep trade open. Franklin offered to pay for the tea himself or raise the money in Boston.

“Though the mischief was the act of persons unknown, yet as probably they cannot be found, or brought to answer for it, there seems to be some reasonable claim on the society at large in which it happened.”

Once Parliament closed down the port of Boston no one ever paid for the tea. Parliament took the tax off tea, but the East India Tea Company was never able to sell tea in America. The Tea Act that had given them a monopoly could not protect them.

Many years later, Sir Winston Churchill—Prime Minister, Historian and Freemason—commented on the Tea Act of Parliament that had given the East India Company a monopoly on tea. Brother Churchill called it “a fatal blunder”.

The Tea Act put a small tax on the East India Tea. It was actually cheap tea that had been stored in warehouses in England. However, the East India Tea Company was bankrupt, so Parliament gave them a monopoly. Tea was to be sold by the Consignees (tea agents) of the one company. This gave the Con-signees a tea monopoly in their area. Keeping the small tax on tea would just prove that Parliament still had the power to tax. But . . . it didn’t work!

In New York, Philadelphia and Charleston, the Consignees for the tea resigned their Commissions at the request of the Sons of Liberty. With no Con-signees to pay the tax and sign for the tea, the East India Company tea ships had to turn around and sail back to England with their cheap tea.

But Boston was different! The Consignees would not resign. Two sons of the Governor and a son-in-law were Consignees. When the Governor’s family is in the tea business the ships cannot leave the harbor.

The Tea Act stated that tea “remaining twenty days unloaded” was subject to seizure by the Customs House and sold for nonpayment of duties. Once the tea was in the Governor’s hands, he could dispose of it secretly to local merchants. When Governor Hutchinson again refused to let the tea ships go on the night before December 17th, (the 16th was the end of the 20 day limit for unloading), the “Mohawks” seated in the balcony at the Old South Meeting Hall took matters into their own hands.

There never would have been a Tea Party if the ships could have left before December 17th. Several of the Brothers of the St. Andrews Lodge did their part in trying to turn the tea ships around.

Brother William Molineux acted as spokesman for the Sons of Liberty. He and Brother Joseph Warren led a crowd of 300 from the Liberty Tree to the Customs House to confront the Consignees. Would these tea agents resign and send the tea ships back to England? The Governor’s sons refused and moved to Fort William under military protection. Just three years before Brother Molineux and Brother James Otis (St. John’s Lodge) had led a crowd of a thousand patriots to confront the Gover-nor’s sons who were importing tea and hiding it in a warehouse against the nonimportation agree-ments. In that tea business, the Hutchinsons sur-rendered the tea and the money for the tea they had already sold. Brother James Otis was the Mason who gave us the saying “Taxation without represen-tation is Tyranny!”.

Brother John Hancock was the Colonel for the Governor’s Cadet Corps who guarded the tea ships. The night before the Tea Party he was aboard the tea ships inspecting his troops. Both he and Brother Joseph Warren had served as Orators at the Com-memoration of those who had died at the Boston Massacre.

Brother John Hancock was the richest merchant in New England. He served as Moderator for a mass Town Meeting of 5,000 who voted to turn the tea ships around. He was a member of the Committee of Selectmen, who were the leading tradesmen of Boston, who met with the Governor and the tea Consignees to try to convince them to let the ships go.

Brother John Rowe was the owner of one of the tea ships, the Eleanor. He was also a Selectman anc promised to use his influence with the Governor tc return the tea ships and the tea to England. Brothel Rowe was the Grand Master of the St. John’s Grand Lodge of Massachusetts (Moderns). In his diary he called the dumping of the tea “a disastrous affair”.

On the day before the Tea Party, Brother Joseph Warren met with Brother John Rowe in a concern for his “ship and cargo”. Brother Warren was tht Grand Master of the Grand Lodge (Ancients) Brother Warren also went to the Customs House with the owner of the tea ship, Dartmouth. All exits to the harbor were blocked. By law the Customs Officials cannot release the ship unless the Con signees unloaded the tea and paid the tax. The next day the Customs Officials were to seize the tea according to law.

In the final appeal to the Governor by the Select-men, Covernor Hutchinson offered to give the tea ship Dartmouth military escort to Castle Island and Fort William where his sons, as Consignees, would unload the tea and pay the tax. The owner of the Dartmouth did not want to move his ship with the help of a 60-gun warship.

During the 19 days prior to the Tea Party, Brother Paul Revere served with the North End Caucus Guard, who prevented the Consignees from unload-ing the tea, wanting it instead returned to England. The Consignees blamed the guard for not unloading; the tea and the guard blamed the Consignees for not returning the tea to England.

Selim Grotto

On December 4th I attended Selim Grotto's Officers Installation. Its special not only because my dear friends are active members in it, But because there are only two Grottos in Minnesota. The other is in Ela-Ala in Duluth. The Leadership is very willing to meet with any Masonic members who wish to start a Grotto in their part of Minnesota.

For those of you not familiar with the Grotto heres a little information you may like to know.
The official name is "The Mystic Order of the Veiled Prophets of the Enchanted Realm of North America.It was formed in 1889 because many believed that the lodges had become too serious and that men would become better Masons if they mixed a little fun and social activity with the serious teachings.

To become a member of the Grotto you must be a Brother in good standing and remain in good standing.The Grotto does not confer Masonic degrees, but is intended to provide a blend of fun and remain Masonic in character.

They sponsor two great humanitarian projects; Cerebral Palsy Research,and Dental care for children with Special needs. I'm very proud to say I have participated in the Enchanted Lantern project. When you can help a child smile you make a positive impact on them forever.

Our very own Mike Wahl was the past Grand Monarch of North America in 1974-1975.

This is the full line of Officers for 2011. I think its pretty impressive the way that Selim is growing and building upon its great tradition.

My lodge Brother Richard Kachman. One of the Men and Brothers on this earth I have the most highest regards and respect for.I think were twins.....maybe not in looks unless you close your eyes.

I was invited to come and spend the evening and I even gave a little talk. I noticed none were sleeping when I finished.

It was a beautiful Minnesota Winter night.....We drove in a Snow Storm to get there. But when we walked it our coldness went away very quickly from all the Warm Smiles and hearts that greeted us.

The Room was very beautifully decorated for the holidays making it even more welcoming.

Red Wing #8 is a Special Place

Red Wing Lodge#8 is a special place for me especially at their December Stated meeting. There is nothing ordinary about it.
The Grand Master of Minnesota Masons John Cook came personally to install the Officers after a beautiful meal.
It was good to see that the lodge Officers had all the Chairs filled with willing and eager Officers.
There were Awards given out as well. This years Hiriam Award was given to Jr. Past Master Ethan Seaberg.Ethan may have protested, but I couldnt have been happier for him. Ethan is very deserving.

Visitors come from far and wide to spend the evening. Last night Lebanon Lodge of Shakopee, and Montgomery Lodge of St Paul brought many members. It was such a pleasure to have the dining room filled with voices and laughter.

Worshipful Brother Gary Thomas does most of the food preparation.He usually prepares Masonic dishes known to lodges across the world. Last night was his famous Maine Oyster Stew. You can't see all of the oysters because of my love for crackers.It is such a simple dish but the flavor is out of this world. The alternative dish was a out standing vegetation Curry. I had bowls of each. I'm not telling how many bowls either.

Gary always makes his famous Christmas Pudding for this meeting . I have several photos for get a good look at it for those not familiar with the dish.

This is a dish that is very dark in appearance from all the dark sugars used. Its filled with dried fruits, nuts and suet and maybe a touch of Brandy.It was topped off with a hard Sauce.

Since my Masonic Blog is turning into something you would find on the Food Network. I will not go into the complex flavors that this heavenly dish gave me.

We were given a big treat when the lights were turned down and the pudding was aflame with blue and purple flames.

There is nothing ordinary about the Brothers of Red Wing lodge. If you have an opporunity I highly recommend you go and share the experience.

The Tradition Continues!

The tradition continues! Except this year with better results. For those of you who may not remember I'll refresh your memory.

Last year around December 30th, the Most Worshipful Grand Master of Iowa Masons Craig Hummel challenged our beloved Grand Master Tom McCarthy to a very friendly non-monetary wager. Ya see the Minnesota Gophers were about to play the Iowa State Cyclones at the Insite Bowl in Tempe Arizona. The winner of the bet was to supply the loser of the bet with the appropriate shirt and hat to wear at the Loser's Annual Communication.

Well ,my Minnesota Golden Gophers lost to Iowa State in a very close game 14 to 13. The rest is history. Our Grand Master, Deputy Grand Master and myself donned Iowa State Gear for at least 15 minutes during our Grand Lodge. I am sorry I won't show those pictures here.

So this year Our Grand Master John Cook invited The Most Worshipful Grand Master Craig Davis to be his guests at the last game of the year at the Minnesota vs. Iowa University game.
The game was at the TCF Stadium on the U of M campus.

As you can see the Grand Master took the opportunity to show off our new Gopher Stadium and the President's Club had all of the amenities. I thought our Grand Masters strategy was brilliant. Treat them special and they will take it easy on us if the Gophers lose. I didn't think it looked too good for us. The Gophers had fired the Coach in mid season, and we were like 2-9 for the season.

After lunch we had a cold hard slap of reality. Grand Master Davis and Past Grand Master Jack Butler provided us with large gift bags. I was afraid to look into it....When I gazed inside I saw a tee shirt, hat and other Iowa University garb. Yup the standing bet from last year was still in effect. Well I left my bag at the table and went to find my seat. Ya see, I was hoping that someone would steal it.....when I returned at half time it was still there.

So take a few minutes and look at the pictures for they tell the story. But it was a great afternoon of Brotherhood and a lot of laughs. It was one of those afternoons that was filled with special moments that will be never forgotten and enjoyed for many years to come.

I was going to go look for a cup of coffee and maybe a small dessert when I ran across Coach Tubby Smith. Tubby is the Gopher Basketball coach. I approached him and acknowledged that he was probably pretty busy and asked him if he had time to pose with me for a photo. Well we talked for over five minutes! So I asked him I could introduce him to my Grand Master.

So the Grand Master and I had a few more minutes with the Coach. His face lit up when we told him we were Masons! He shared some very special stories with us.

Here you see Tubby covering up the Iowa Hawkeye symbol on Craig's Jacket. That was so funny. Jack had brought jars of his home made rhubarb jam and presented a jar to Tubby.

A little later in the day the University of Minnesota President Robert Bruininks stopped by. He recognized John and me as being from the Grand Lodge of Minnesota. Wow what a great memory.

I'm not sure what's going on in this picture..but I think Jack ran out of rhubarb jam?

What really happened a few minutes later is that Craig and Jack tried to put an Iowa Jacket on President Bruininks. Steve Johnson had the camera and refused to take the picture....another round of laughter.

Just the Gopher Fans.

This was the best part of the entire afternoon. My Gophers played a cliff hanger of a game but they pulled it off.

You can't see it in this photo. But the players just claimed the trophy of the Game "Floyd of Rose ville". Floyd is a very heavy bronze statue of a pig. It was a pretty big deal to us fans because Iowa has held on to Floyd since 2006. The Trophy tradition goes back to 1935. But Minnesota and Iowa share a very long tradition of playing football together since 1891.

I was going to rush the field, but the Grand Master called my name.............

Minnesota Demolay Grand Master Class

The Most Worshipful Grand Master of Minnesota John Cook and State Master Councilor Chris Pierce at the Minneota Demolay Grand Masters Class. It was held at the Minneapolis Scottish Rite on Saturday November 20th.
For those of you wondering DeMolay is a young Mens organization that prepares young men to lead successful, happy, and productive lives.
Using timeless principles and practical, hands-on experience, DeMolay opens doors for young men ages 12 to 21 by helping them develop the civic awareness, personal responsibility, and leadership skills so vitally needed in our society today. DeMolay takes a fun approach to this serious mission by building important bonds of friendship among members in more than 1,000 chapters worldwide.
I was a Demolay ! It made a huge positive influence on my life. I cannot say enough about it. I even think that we should have a Minnesota Demolay alumi Association stay tuned for that.
It was a beauitful cermony and the Boys performace was OUTSTANDING! You should consider being there next year I will.

I am a proud American and Veteran of the US Army. I always observe this day for those who have served in our Nations Military. I came across this beauitfuly worded speech that far better describes and honors the Veteran better than I could.
Our Country was born in blood and maintained by the blood of the Men and Women who wear our Countries uniform.

We celebrate Veterans Day on the anniversary of the armistice that ended World War I, the armistice that began on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. And I wonder, in fact, if all Americans' prayers aren't the same as those I mentioned a moment ago. The timing of this holiday is quite deliberate in terms of historical fact but somehow it always seems quite fitting to me that this day comes deep in autumn when the colors are muted and the days seem to invite contemplation.

We are gathered at the National Cemetery, which provides a final resting place for the heroes who have defended our country since the Civil War. This amphitheater, this place for speeches, is more central to this cemetery than it first might seem apparent, for all we can ever do for our heroes is remember them and remember what they did -- and memories are transmitted through words.

Sometime back I received in the name of our country the bodies of four marines who had died while on active duty. I said then that there is a special sadness that accompanies the death of a serviceman, for we're never quite good enough to them-not really; we can't be, because what they gave us is beyond our powers to repay. And so, when a serviceman dies, it's a tear in the fabric, a break in the whole, and all we can do is remember.

It is, in a way, an odd thing to honor those who died in defense of our country, in defense of us, in wars far away. The imagination plays a trick. We see these soldiers in our mind as old and wise. We see them as something like the Founding Fathers, grave and gray haired. But most of them were boys when they died, and they gave up two lives -- the one they were living and the one they would have lived. When they died, they gave up their chance to be husbands and fathers and grandfathers. They gave up their chance to be revered old men. They gave up everything for our country, for us. And all we can do is remember.

There's always someone who is remembering for us. No matter what time of year it is or what time of day, there are always people who come to this cemetery, leave a flag or a flower or a little rock on a headstone. And they stop and bow their heads and communicate what they wished to communicate. They say, "Hello, Johnny," or "Hello, Bob. We still think of you. You're still with us. We never got over you, and we pray for you still, and we'll see you again. We'll all meet again." In a way, they represent us, these relatives and friends, and they speak for us as they walk among the headstones and remember. It's not so hard to summon memory, but it's hard to recapture meaning.

And the living have a responsibility to remember the conditions that led to the wars in which our heroes died. Perhaps we can start by remembering this: that all of those who died for us and our country were, in one way or another, victims of a peace process that failed; victims of a decision to forget certain things; to forget, for instance, that the surest way to keep a peace going is to stay strong. Weakness, after all, is a temptation -- it tempts the pugnacious to assert themselves -- but strength is a declaration that cannot be misunderstood. Strength is a condition that declares actions have consequences. Strength is a prudent warning to the belligerent that aggression need not go unanswered.

Peace fails when we forget what we stand for. It fails when we forget that our Republic is based on firm principles, principles that have real meaning, that with them, we are the last, best hope of man on Earth; without them, we're little more than the crust of a continent. Peace also fails when we forget to bring to the bargaining table God’s first intellectual gift to man: common sense. Common sense gives us a realistic knowledge of human beings and how they think, how they live in the world, what motivates them. Common sense tells us that man has magic in him, but also clay. Common sense can tell the difference between right and wrong. Common sense forgives error, but it always recognizes it to be error first.

We endanger the peace and confuse all issues when we obscure the truth; when we refuse to name an act for what it is; when we refuse to see the obvious and seek safety in Almighty. Peace is only maintained and won by those who have clear eyes and brave minds. Peace is imperiled when we forget to try for agreements and settlements and treaties; when we forget to hold out our hands and strive; when we forget that God gave us talents to use in securing the ends He desires. Peace fails when we forget that agreements, once made, cannot be broken without a price.
Each new day carries within it the potential for breakthroughs, for progress. Each new day bursts with possibilities. And so, hope is realistic and despair a pointless little sin. And peace fails when we forget to pray to the source of all peace and life and happiness. I think sometimes of General Matthew Ridgeway, who, the night before D-day, tossed sleepless on his cot and talked to the Lord and listened for the promise that God made to Joshua: “I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.”
We're surrounded today by the dead of our wars. We owe them a debt we can never repay. All we can do is remember them and what they did and why they had to be brave for us. All we can do is try to see that other young men never have to join them. Today, as never before, we must pledge to remember the things that will continue the peace. Today, as never before, we must pray for God's help in broadening and deepening the peace we enjoy. Let us pray for freedom and justice and a more stable world. And let us make a compact today with the dead, a promise in the words for which General Ridgeway listened, “I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.”

In memory of those who gave the last full measure of devotion, may our efforts to achieve lasting peace gain strength. And through whatever coincidence or accident of timing, I tell you that a week from now when I am some thousands of miles away, believe me, the memory and the importance of this day will be in the forefront of my mind and in my heart.

Masonic Records held by the KGB revealed

A new revealing look at the history of Freemasonry will be presented at an International Conference by the Canonbury Masonic Research Center in London England on October 30-31, 2010.

The keynote speaker, Dr. Patricia Kennedy Grimstead, of Harvard University, will present a lecture entitled "War on Freemasons: the fate of the Nazi and Soviet seized books and archives." The lecture will provide an overview of the millions of Masonic documents orginally stolen from the Masonic lodges by the Nazis during World War Two. Then during the Sack of Berlin, the documents were transported by the forerunner of the Soviet KGB and placed into the archives in Moscow.

As we entered the dinner room, we marveled at the elegant transformation.

The lodge was chartered in 2009.I am kind of thrilled for I actually signed the Charter as the Senior Grand Warden. They have all visited us, and we have or are making plans on visiting them very soon. It is a real treat for all when they are here.

Our meetings are held eight times a year in members' homes. The other four lodge nights are held in selected lodges across the metro area. The calendar is made up twelve months in advance and published. So it's easy for visitors to come and spend an evening with us. We do like to have a reservations so we can set another plate at the table.

Our lodge is filled with great Masons and leaders. Most are Past Masters or sitting Masters. We have a few Past Grand Masters and me the Deputy Grand Master. There are also Custodians and Monitors of the Ritual. Bottom line is that we all share the same passion for Freemasonry. That shared passion only creates a closer bond as Brothers.

We want to keep the lodge small. Sixty members. This way everyone is expected to contribute to betterment of the lodge. You may be an Officer or on a committee or assigned tasks and projects. We all pitch in and do our share. It makes us feel that we are actually contributing and making a difference. We don't want to "belong to another lodge" and we didn't join just to have another dues card in our wallet. We are very active. We are a little lodge that gets things done !

One of the things I like that we do is that every month the Lodge Secretary sends out a Summons. We are expected to appear for the lodge event or provide a good excuse to the Secretary. My Grand Lodge visits are wholeheartedly excused. But I must admit when I miss the meeting I really feel I missed out on something special.

I had never had a deep fried turkey before. I found it to be very tasty -- Jason did a nice job. I watched him prepare the turkey and I was impressed with his safety procedures.

Myself and Ted Martz after the meeting and dinner. It was a nice cool evening to be outside where I enjoyed one glass of red wine and a cigar. This is where we can have a meaningful discussion for 30 to 45 minutes. Most of the discussions are focused.

Worshipful Brother and PHD Paul Hardt our Lodge Education Officer, as he was leading the discussion. Tonight's topic was Sir Winston Churchill during the Battle of Britain. Every meeting has a well planned education program.

Prudence Lodge in Windom Minnesota

On September 19, 2010 Prudence Lodge in Windom Minnesota held its annual Dusty Square and Compass degree. It is an event that most of its members look forward to every year. I stood in line with 40 other Brothers. Where I had the most memorable and delightful conversations. You know the kind you have with your brother in the kitchen? Then I was handed a grilled steak that covered my plate and didn't leave much room for anything else. It was one of the best steaks I have ever eaten. I managed somehow to avoid eating one of the many beautiful homemade desserts (only because I'm watching my weight).

After dinner we adjorned to the lodge room for a very nice meeting. Area Deputy Doug Pamp presented the lodge with their Silver level Lodge Recognition Award. It was easy to see how they attained that level after I heard a list of events and activities that the lodge is involved in. It was impressive.

The Worshipful Master James Nesseth presented Doug Anderson with his 60 years in Minnesota Freemasonry award and Howard Clark with his 50 years in MInnesota Freemasonry. Both Brothers received pins and certificates. That was a delightful moment for all of us.

Potentate Denny Kaarup of El Rad Shrine and Reid Jensen the Senior Grand Deacon of the Grand Lodge of South Dakota came to show their support. It was nice to welcome them on our side of the border.

All in all it was a great evening and I really hope I get invited back again....and soon.

I am the type of person who always looking for words of wisdom to be inspired by or to live by. The other day I was doing some research on the Feast of Tishri when I came across this address to the St Louis Scottish Rite many years ago by Rabbi Julius Nodel 32 degree.I enjoyed reading it a few times to get the full effect.

"Among the symbols of Succoth are four species of plants—the citron, the branch of the palm tree, the myrtle leaves, and the willow leaves. The citron plant produces both fruit and fragrance. The palm produces fruit but no fragrance. The myrtle produces fragrance but no fruit, and the willow produces neither fruit nor fragrance. This teaches us that there are also four kinds of people. There are those that have knowledge and good deeds—they correspond to the citron. There are those who live a life of good deeds, but have no knowledge—they are like the palm. There are those who have knowledge, but perform no good deeds—they are like the myrtle, and there are those who have neither knowledge nor good deeds—they are like the willow. Yet, on Succoth, all of these different species of plants are placed together and bound as one, thus teaching us that though there are different kinds of people on Earth, with their own interests and desires, accomplishments and failures, they must still be bound together in one universal brotherhood."

In Freemasonry we have no relgious agenda. I think that as men from all faiths we can attend these Masonic observances and find them to be acceptable if not inspiring to our hearts.

Green Beans the Unofficial Masonic Vegetable

I was in the store the other day and happened to see that Green Beans were on sale.It being Labor Day made me think of childern returning to school and us returning to our Masonic Lodges from our Summer break.
Ive been anxious these last few weeks as I am sure you have to return to our home lodges. I am looking forward to renew old friendships and to see the faces of the new Brothers. As I am tying my apron I hope to hear hear new fishing tales of the one that got away or bigger than life stories of golf games involving holes in one. After a few hearty laughs and a few big hugs I urn to hear the sound of the Gavel to take my seat and to get to work.
I can't wait for that first plate of the lodge meal is passed to me with a big heap of the Unofficial Masonic vegetable, green beans upon it. I dont care if they are canned, frozen, fresh, steamed, boiled or in a casserole. For when I see them on my plate I know Im back in a place where I belong....and a place where my heart is content, where I am safe . Im in a Free Masons Lodge.
So when I was in the store I picked up a few large cans of these to maybe give like a house warming gifts to lodges that I may visit or maybe Ill give them to my Sister who hates them

So I hope this month you will visit your lodge and tell me about what you did over the summr.

Midwest Conference of Grand Masters

Last week I attended the Midwest Conference of Grand Lodges in Sioux Fall South Dakota. I had a chance to enjoy the four hour drive with Senior Grand Warden Brian Beerman.We had an outstanding talk. I'm afraid we could have talked for a few more hours. We were joined by our Grand Master John Cook and Grand Lodge Secretery Doug Campbell.

The Conference is an exchange of ideas and information on what programs are working for them and what approaches they are taking to solving future issues. It's a great place to gain insight and valuable information on common problems that we share.

Every Grand Master had a good report, and it was good to see that one Grand Lodge to our south that starts with a I and ends in an A is using our Minnesota Lodge Recognition Program. Not to name names or anything...

This year I enjoyed hearing about the programs that the Grand Lodge of Michigan is working on. I will admit not only was one of the ideas exciting...it was cutting edge for Freemasonry. BUT I CANNOT REVEAL THAT HERE...however, if you read on I will tell about one of the Other Projects that they are working on....keep reading.

I think what I enjoy the most is the renewal of friendships at this conference. We have known each other over the years. We have advanced together through our Lines and the Deputy Grands are preparing to advance...if tradition prevails. So it was exciting to see each other and get caught up with each others lives. On Sunday morning after breakfast we shook hands, gave each other a hug and said "Ill see you at your Communication -- Safe Travels, Brother."

The Grand Lodge of Michigan started a great project to help the local lodges in providing information telling the public who Masons -- which they do at community events. They have developed a traveling display booth as you see above, with signage that tells of their program, Share the Secret.

It is a trailer that can be towed from their Grand Lodge to any local event. Inside the trailer is the tent, table, chairs, tee shirts, plus printed literature talking points to inform the people attending the booth. It contains everything that you need to host a public information event.

My Friend and Author of "Freemasons for Dummies," Chris Hodapp. Doesn't he look great! He has lost 60 pounds so far. I purchased two more copies of the book. It was my 15th and 16th copy......I keep giving them away. Chris doesn't mind and reminded me not to worry -- he will print more!

Grand Master Dean Behrens did a great job in every aspect of the planning and preparation. Of course his lovely Bride Donna had a lot to do with it as well.

Next year the Conference will be held here in Minnesota......Do you think they would like to have a tour of one of my favorite places? The Spam Museum? I better get to work!

The Top Ten Reasons to Become a Mason

I'm planning to attend the Midwest Conference of Grand Masters in Souix Falls, South Dakota next weekend. I have been looking over my notes from last year's conference in Ohama, Nebraska in my preparation. I'd like to take a moment to share with you some of the comments of the Past Grand Master of Iowa Jack Butler's speech. The Most Worshipful said that every Mason should be able to tell their friends and family at a moment's notice, the reasons and benefits of becoming a Free Mason. He then recited the 10 reasons provided below. I could not agree more -- that we all need to have prepared in our minds and hearts a short talk or reasons why someone that we think is qualified should join us in the Craft. I hope that you find these of use.

TEN REASONS TO BECOME A MASON

1. A place where you can confidently trust every person and trust your family with them also.

2. A place where, within moral and civil guidelines; free thought, free speaking and the spiritual growth of man, can grow into its fullest potential.

This is the second year the Past Grand Masters of Minnesota have met for Lunch. It's a very simple gathering, but it's a very warming and caring time. The photo you see shows our Past Masonic leaders for over the 37 years.

It was great to see the Past Grands together in one place for a couple of hours. Many dropped their regular activities of the day to gather, some from far away. We talked about a lot of things, but it was a time to reach out and look into each others' eyes and share about what is happening in our lives that's important. We talked about Ralph Holquist and his battle with cancer, and mostly how we miss him. Others shared about the memorable events in their year as Grand Master. It certainly was special and I don't plan on missing next year's or any other, for that matter. They are all my Masonic Fathers.

Minnesota DeMolay Conclave 2010

I had the great opportunity to attend this year's Minnesota DeMolay Conclave Opening Day on July 29th. It was held at Gustavus Apolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota. I had been invited to attend and I grabbed the opportunity to go.

As I was driving to the campus I was reflecting upon my youth, being a very active member of Camelot Chapter in Richfield, MN. I have been to many Conclaves in years past. But this time there was something missing...I didn't bring the hundreds of water balloons to drop out of the dorm windows. My back seat didn't contain the three cans of shaving cream, a true multi-use party treat. The plastic doggy doo, and plastic human ahhh throw up is also long gone. This trip I wore a clean shirt and my best Deputy Grand Master smile and hand shake.

I was greeted quickly and very warmly by Karen Pehle, the State Adminstrator, and Mark Hailer, the Executive Officer. They introduced me to many of the adult staff. My old friend Ted Kiefat and I shared a big hug and many warm friendly words. As the boys came off the softball diamonds, I shook their hands and got to know them a little.

We then went to the Campus Cafeteria. Conclave is very well served at Gustavus for many reason, but especially for the food. It's a place where the boys could really enjoy a big meal in a very nice dining area. I certainly enjoyed my salad and great conversation with them. I mean, they actually listened to my stories!

The photo below shows the Minnesota Demolay State Officers and myself. (I wish I would have gotten the memo about the tie.) They are all very sharp, and I watched them for one hour conduct a great business meeting...we could have took notes and learned something. They also managed to present "The Simpsons- Stone Cutter" eposode. I'm sorry -- I laughed the loudest in the room.

After the meeting we were going to be presented with the Jacques DeMolay degree. The photo directly below is the setting looking upon the Rugby pitch, on which the degree was to be performed. I was very excited, for I hadn't seen this degree for several years. For those of you who don't know the story, I won't tell the secret, but King Philip ordered Jaques DeMolay to be burned at the stake. The story is a testimonal to loyalty and friendship.

The degree was performed in full costume and the quality of the performance was EXCELLENT! All the boys knew their parts and performed outstandingly. I was impressed. It was at the close of the degree that I personally figured out what my inner self was trying to tell me all evening. You know the feeling you can't get your arms around? I've come home...I was perfectly content in my surroundings. I was part of them...I once was and now I've returned...I'm home.

There is always room for a little fun at Conclave. Also a time for personal growth and development no matter what age you are.

Thank you for a wonderful evening that I'll remember for many years to come. But then again... lets do it again next year!

King Solomon's Temple in Brazil

The Brazilian Universal Church of the Kingdom of God has commissioned Architect Rogerio Silva de Araujo to build a full size replica of King Solomons Temple in Brazil's Capital San Paulo. The Temple will provide a super sized building and services to the capital city. It will tower over the city at 180 feet tall, have seating capacity for 10,000 people, provide classroom space for 1,300 children, TV and radio studios, and parking spaces for 1,000 cars. The temple will also house a replica of the Ark of the Covenant.

The Church officials wish for the building appearance to be as authentic as possible. They have taken extra measures to ensure that. They have signed an $8 million dollar contract with a company to import stones for the building. The stones will come from Jerusalem, just like the stones used to build the original temple in Israel. Bishop Edir Macedo posted in his blog that the new building stones were witness to the powers of God 2,000 years ago.

It is expected that the project will cost around $200 million dollars and take approximately four years to complete.

Here is something I was thinking about....Do you think the Architect is a Freemason? If so, do you think on one of those long nights of working late, as he is sitting at his drafting table, and as he stares at his drawing... thinking on how to solve a problem... Perhaps he puts his pencil to his mouth and wonders to himself, "What would Hiram do?"

My Lodge Brothers and My Brother's House

These are some of my Lodge Brothers of Cataract Lodge #2 and Minnehaha Lodge #165 Minneapolis, Minnesota. We are celebrating our move into "Our Brothers House" Minnehaha Lodge Building ten years ago. Every July we hold a joint meeting after one of the best steak dinners around. It's an event that you don't want to miss.

Its a long and emotional story for many us so I'll try to spare you all the details. The Best Buy Corporation wanted to build their world headquarters in Richfield, Minnesota. So the city condemned 200 homes and businesses so that Best Buy could build a huge campus.

We gave a gallant fight and negotiated hard for a fair price. But we gave up a building that was built by the lodge Brothers from the ground up and it was emotional for all to have to empty it and to have to see the building torn down. So we spent many evening and week ends packing up our stuff. But then the Brothers from Minnehaha Lodge came and graciously invited us to share their lodge with us.

We locked the doors for one last time, removed the Cornerstone from the building and drove away with tears in our eyes and with sore backs.

When we arrived on the hottest day of the year with the moving vans, the Brothers of Minnehaha Lodge were standing on the grass to greet us. They shook our hands and saw that we we were exhausted, so they pushed us aside and started in to move our stuff. We were greeted as a home coming and given full access to the building. Anything was ours for the asking. It was truly like "moving into your brother's house."

Now in the picture you see is the Grand Lodge Secretary, Junior Grand Steward, Monitors of the Ritual, member of the Jurisprudence Committee, Secretary of the Minneapolis Valley Scottish Rite, a National Television Star and now a Motivatival speaker from the Biggest Loser, but most importantly they are all my brothers. I'm sure you can see that we at Cataract #2 and Minnehaha #165 are very serious about freemasonry. (There were about 40 more out of the view of the camera).

Our Master Lane Guyat is an accomplished artist in fabric, oil, and cake. So he handmade shirts specifically for each wearer. As you can see, they are all different and colorful. Lane said he may have a suprise for me next year.....I can't wait to see.

Minnehaha Lodge is in the Southeast corner of Minneapolis. It's in a neighborhood that I was in a lot growing up. So it's like a second home for me. The two Lodges' relationship only deepens daily with each day.

I miss Richfield -- I'm not kidding anybody. I drive past my lodge location several times a week in the normal course of my activities. I now only see a parking lot......a very expensive parking lot.

I'd be happy to share the whole story over a cup of coffee or a pint of beer if you like.....I'll even buy.

The 136th Annual Shrine Imperial Shrine Convention is currently being held in Toronto Canada.

Today I had the opportunity to conduct a telephone interview of the Zuhrah Shrines Oriental Guide Ted Martz. Ted informed me that the Potentate, Darryl Metzger, and the Zuhrah delegation is based at the Harbor Westin Hotel. Toronto is a very impressive city in its architecture and the activities that are all going on right now. Ted said besides 10,000 Shriners, The Queen of England is on her yearly visit. Ted and Jon Hansen just happed to be about ten feet away as the Queen drove past them in her motorcade. The Queen is there to help celebrate Canada Day this year. I wonder what the Queen was thinking as she drove past all the Shriners wearing their Red fezs?

Toronto is also currently hosting the 2010 Toronto Waterfront Tour. Tall ships from around the globe are docked for tours of the public. There was a parade of the ships that Ted found to be a highlight of the trip so far.

But according to my law enforcement sources in Toronto, I am told that they are preparing the parade route for a world class parade on Tuesday, July 6th. I wish I could be there to watch the tiny cars, to see lots of clowns of all possible descriptions, motorbikes of all types and sizes. And a real treat for me would be to see 1,000 massed bagpipers and drum corps marching through the streets with the beautiful music of the bagpipes floating between the skyscrapers of Toronto.

Of course Ted Martz said that his real joy comes from talking with his fellow Masons from across all of North America, from all walks of life. He said it was a great place to exchange ideas, make new friends and see old friends.

I should say that when I called Ted, he was sitting in the Imperial Shrine meeting. I could hear the speaker making the address in the background. So Ted really does have his nose to the grindstone looking out for our interests as well.

To the Shriners: I hope you're all having a great time and I hope to join you next year in Denver Colorado.

I hope this is me about 15 years after I retire....just enjoying life!

Just in case I've got your attention here are three interesting facts about the Shrine. Did you know...

1. ...that the Shriners are said to have the second-largest single purchase of motorcycles in the world, next to the police?

2. ..that the Shrine Session in Toronto will bring over $4 million dollars to their economy?

3. ...that we fund about a billion Dollars (US) a year for the Shrine hospitals across the United States?

Our Birthday- July 4th

On Sunday July 4th we will be celebrating our Nations founding remembering that day in 1776 that the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence.

Today as I was standing on a Street Corner on a beauitful day in Minneapolis Minnesota. I remembered that because two hundred and thirty four years ago and since at each moment when the promise was in jeopardy, ordinary men and women just like you and me found the courage to defend it and some made the supreme sacriface to keep the promise alive.

So on July 4th wont you join me and read the Declaration of Independence for yourself. But most of all I hope you will take a moment to appericate the men and women in uniform who defend our rights and freedoms.

Red Wing Table Lodge

Last evening I had the honor of attending Red Wing Lodge #6 Table Lodge. It was held in one of Minnesota's great hotels, The St. James Hotel. Of course if you knew the Worshipful Master Ethan Seaberg, and the Past Master Gary Thomas, you would know that everything they do is a class act and no detail is overlooked. Last night was no different.

The social hour was a homecoming of sorts for me. For I haven't seen all of the Brothers in one place for some time now. There were several lovely wives I also got to meet as well and reacquainted with others. Ethan had one of the new brothers play the grand piano. Matt played a very impressive selection of pieces: jazz, popular, classical, among others. He played for 90 minutes non stop all from memory! I had a chance to get to know Matt a little. He is a Law Enforcement student at a major Minnesota college. But he earns his money to attend college as a professional bowler. I can see a Masonic bowling team coming up in my future.

I took a break from the wonderful conversation and tried some fablous appetizers. There was a Stilton cheese that deserved a nice glass of red wine. It was a perfect combination that was memorable.

Dinner started with the Master of the Lodge Ethan giving a few toasts. As we started our salad, we could hear the tornado sirens going off in the background. We all looked at one another and ate a little faster... As the sirens grew louder, my table companions said to each other "I don't hear anything -- do you hear anything?"

The hotel staff then required us to evacuate the room and ushered us into the safety of the basement. I was the last person out so I took the photos. The basement was very secure and pleasant. I stood near the stairs in case anyone needed assistance. There was a large mother daughter pajama party going on in the hotel, so I also offered my assistance to them as well (I am a police officer and duty always calls). Now my Brother Shawn Carrick and his beauitful wife Ann informed me that they had the most fun meeting a group of entertaining people in the basement bar!
I never thought of that... next time I'll follow Shawn.

As we waited for only about thirty minutes the all clear was given and we returned to our festive board up stairs.

Worshipful Master Ethan Seaberg of Red Wing Lodge and Master of Ceremonies. He performed an outstanding job and kept us laughing and on time.

The guest Speaker of the evening Grand Inspector General of the Minnesota Scottish Rite. My Brother Jerry is my personal favorite Masonic Speaker. He is the kind of speaker that holds you on the edge of your seat, can tug on your heart strings, and feel very proud to be a Freemason -- all at the same time.

I think Jerry is so good, he could read the Minneapolis phone book aloud and captivate us.Our Inspector General is truly a Big Tent Mason and I am very proud to know him.

Even though I was considering staying in the room and helping myself to the buffet, staffperson Val held firm to her duty to ensure I was safe in the basement. Despite the fact that I offered her half of the apple pie that I had my eye on!

Of course at the end of the night as I was one of the last ones to leave. I thought what a nice night that was filled with caring friendship, good food, and even alitle excitment. The Red Wing Table Lodge will be a wonderful memory for many years to come.

Giving Blood the Gift of Life-follow up story

The office I went to was very nice...a very welcoming environment. The Staff was great and asked me 50 questions during the screening process and took my temperature and blood pressure. I had to show my ID. They didn't laugh at my weight on my driver's license! And they said it was such a flattering photo!!

Then we went into a larger area where there were others donating blood, plasma, and platelets. Some were reclining with blankets and watching DVDs, looking comfortable.

These chairs are really quite comfy. I wouldn't mind having one in front of my TV. Once we got started, the donation really didn't take very long. 20 minutes or so.

You know a Mason by his actions.

It didn't hurt a bit either........................

Grand Lodge of Manitoba

Last week I had the honor of attending the Annual Communication of the Grand Lodge of Manitoba Canada. I am in a hurry to post these images because I'm off to the Grand Lodge of North Dakota in the Morning.
I plan on posting my experiences when I return for both. The Brothers in Manitoba were wonderful and are true Masons. I enjoyed myself very much. More of the story when I return. Until then here are some images to look upon

The Grand Lodge of Minnesota Corporate Board voted to donate Twenty five hundred dollars ----American to the Museum of Human Rights. Again we voted to donate $2,500 dollars......thats $ 2 5 , 0 0. 00----see the next photo please

This will be the funny story and this is where the Grand Master announced that the Grand Lodge of Minnesota donated TWENTY FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS to the Human Rights Museum.

I stood up and said" Excuse me Grand Master" !!!! Our GrandMaster caught himself perfectly and of course corrected himself so honorably . The photo is everyone having a good laugh.

I think our Grand Treasurer and Grand Secretery had heard it they would of had a heart attack............

I just love editional cartoons, and the cartoons that capture our thought of everyday life. The kind of thought we think but are afraid to say aloud. Some one shared these with me so I dont know where they came from or who the artist is. So I cant give them credit for their work. But if I ever had the chance to find out I would like to shake their hand and tell them that I think they captured the average Americans thoughts.......so thank you!

I had the great opportunity to spend some time with the Brothers of Albert Pike Lodge in Hopkins Minnesota this past Saturday to help them celebrate Main Street Days. I love this lodge because its an old fashion Masonic lodge that is constantly using new ideas to gain exposier to the community and gain new members. All the while upholding the traditional Masonic principils and the work.

The white things attached to the fence is a small table or ledge. The crowds of people can belly up to the counter order a Brat or Hot dog and eat in comfort. Or they can walk into the lodge and sit for awhile and rest their sore feet, and get a tour of the lodge.This picture was taken very early but by 2pm there was an expected 500 customers and positive contacts with the members of the city.

Heres a few things about the lodge you may not know. Currently the city of Hopkins is a first ring surburb of the city of Minneapolis. But in 1900 the city was a bustling town of 1600 citzens.There were 34 businesses, one grade schoo with 300 pupils and the cross roads for five rail roads. There were several franternal but not a Masonic lodge. There was 66 men who lived in the town but they traveled to to surronding lodges. I think the thought of traveling the Country roads another Winter mayhave created interest in forming a Masonic Lodge.

The Lodge received their Charter on October 20, 1901. They met like many new lodges at a store in town until they could build a lodge. They completed this building you see on October 15, 1902.Albert Pike lodge has operated non stop in this building ever since. The Brothers have taken great care of it over the years and I can testify that they have done the work themselves.

This Masonic Lodge is very well know in its community. Albert Pike Lodge has won awards from the city, the Histroical Society, and the Council of the Arts.I think that I can say that if there is an event in the City of Hopkins Albert Pike Lodge is involved in some big or small fashion.They are Relevant to their community.

The fat guy on the left is myself( the diet is going well 30 pounds so far) and the Brother on the Right is Lodge Secretery Marty Olazowka. A great man and Brother. Please remember this picture because rarely do you see Marty without a crisp white shirt and a snappy bow tie.

O'Neal Hampton Biggest Loser Update

On April 26, 2010 O'Neal fell below the yellow line with his Daughter Sunshine, putting them both up for elimination. O'Neal stepped forward and asked his fellow contestants to eliminate him, so that Sunshine could stay and continue her journey on the program. O'Neal is now back home.

15 weeks ago O'Neal began his weight loss journey, weighing in at 389 pounds. He stayed on the Biggest Loser for 15 weeks and lost 139 pounds. He now weighs 250 pounds.

Biggest Loser Finalist Is a Minnesota Freemason

O'Neal Hampton the Junior Warden of Cataract Lodge #2 of Minneapolis, Minnesota, is currently somewhere at a secret location on the famous television show The Biggest Loser. Joining him in this grueling life changing experience is his daughter Sunshine.

The photo on the below left was taken on September 8th, 2010 just before our Junior Warden O'Neal started the Biggest Loser. With O'Neal is the Master of Cataract Lodge Dave Kampf and Senior Warden Lane Guyot.

The photo on the below right is from February 23rd when O'Neal stopped in. He took us all by surprise when he took a break from his work out and exercise program and joined us for a Fellow Craft degree. You can tell he is much smaller in this photo.

Its always a great pleasure to see my Brother O'Neal . Because it means a big hug, a warm smile, and a meaningful conversation. O'Neal is a very busy man. He is a Station Manager for the Post Office. During Football season after work he rushes to one of our local high schools to help coach and mentor the kids. But he will always have time to stop and talk if you need to see him. O'Neal has been a great leader and supporter of our youth and Athletic and Scholarship programs in our community.

For those of you who are busy going to Masonic events all week and don't get a chance to watch the show, here is a quick review of what it is about. The Biggest Loser is a two hour reality television show that is on NBC. The show recruits extremely overweight people to participate in a competition. The contestants are brought to a secret location to live for several months. The object is whoever loses the largest percentage of their body weight is awarded a $250,000 cash prize.

To make it even more exciting each week, one contestant is voted off the show. The contestant is sent home, but still has a chance to win $100,000 by following a weight loss program at home.

I have watched more television in the past 14 weeks than I have in the past 15 years. Every week I make sure to see O'Neal and Sunshine. I can't believe that every week, I'm yelling words of encouragement to television as those two are involved in some weekly physical activity. Or how I had tears of joy when I saw O'Neal completing a series of push ups the week his brother died. Or I gasped when Sunshine fell below the yellow line and was almost eliminated.

Every week I watch my Brother who is subduing his passions and making himself a better man.

We at Cataract are very proud of O'Neal, but then again we always were. The biggest loser is our biggest winner.

This is week 14 and Oneal has lost 119 pounds so far, and Sunshine has lost 84 pounds.

ME?......................................I'm down 12 pounds in 8 weeks. For as huge of an effort that this weight loss has been for me, it pales in comparison to their accomplishments.

The British are Coming! The British are Coming!

April 18th/19th I am celebrating the famous midnight ride of Paul Revere: Master Mason and later the Second Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts.

Paul Revere and William Dawes were instructed by Joseph Warren (another great Freemason) in 1775 to ride from Boston to Lexington to warn Samuel Adams and John Hancock that the British Army was coming to arrest them, and to seize the Patriot's weapon stores in Concord.

Paul Revere was sent across the Charles River to begin his journey from Charleston to Lexington. William Dawes was sent a on different path the long way via the Boston neck to Lexington.

Both men sounded the alarm and helped the colonists prepare for the advancement of the British Army. Hours after the alarm was sounded the "shot that rang out around the world" was heard. America was born in blood.

This American story is one of my favorites and is rich in details and lore. One man became famous, while the other died in obscurity. I have had many books read to me as a child, and I now have read the stories to my children. It's a tale that's based in history, and one which I never grow tired of.

Here are a few facts you may not know about Paul Revere. He was a Mason in St. Andrews Lodge in 1760 in Boston. Paul Revere was active in his lodge and worked his way through the chairs. He served nine terms as Worshipful Master. At 60 years old he was elected as Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts December 8, 1794 to 1797.

These are just a few facts and I hope it encourages you to find out more about Grand Master Revere and his life .

National Treasure #3

Attention National Treasure fans! I have good news. It was announced earlier this week that the Disney Corporation is planning for the third installment of National Treasure and the film is in the making and speeding ahead.

The film will have a very established production staff. The Director is Jon Turtelbaub and the screen writers are Carlo Bernard and Doug Miro. They have just finsihed up the Disney movie with Nicolas Cage in "The Sorcers Apprentice"

It is my understanding that Nicolas Cage will return to play the adventurous archaelogist and historian Benjamin Gates. Actors Justin Bartha, Dian Krugerand, Jon Voight are also expected to return.

The movie is expected to be released sometime in 2011.

I am going to go out on a limb very early even before the movie is even written and predict the plot of National Treasure Three. My prediction is based on a clue that was given to us in "National Treasure Book of Secrets."

If you recall from the plot line of the movie, there was a book kept by the President of the United States for the eyes only of the Presidents following him. This book was passed from President to President. This book contained all the answers to the biggest secrets in American History.

In the movie, Benjamin Gates (Nicolas Cage) convinced the President to tell him where the book was kept, and the President told him that the book was in the Library of Congress. The President then directed Ben Gates to read Page 47.

At the end of the movie the President asks Ben about what he read on Page 47 of the Book of Secrets, Ben replied, "It's life altering, sir." Of course we dont know what that information is, but that might be the starting point to the new movie.

I am anxious to learn more about National Treasure #3. I hope that film director Jerry Bruckheimer and actor Nicolas Cage will bring incredible surprises from Page 47 of the Book of Secrets. Whatever it is I'm sure it's going to be another cliffhanger.

PS at this stage there has been no mentions of Freemasons in the Movie. But its very early to tell.

The Grand Master of Iowa Craig Hummell proposed to Grand Master Tom McCarthy a few months ago that if the Iowa Cyclones lost to the Minnesota Gophers in the Insight Bowl, that MWB McCarthy would have to pose for photos clad in Iowa State Cyclones apparel. And if the Gophers won, then MWB Hummell would have to don Gopher gear. Well, you all know that the Gophers lost to the Cyclones, and here are the photos.

MWB Craig was also so kind to provide a gift to me as well. Thanks Craig! It is a nice hat. I try not to wear it when I am with MWB Tom McCarthy, or MWB Steve Johnson, who also is an avid Gophers fan.

The Grand Lodge of Manitoba Canada each year presents to the Grand Lodge of Minnesota the traveling trophy. Then in June the GrandMaster of Minnesota returns the gavel back at the Manitoba Annual Communication.

The Gavel is made by an American with Canadian Maple. A Canadian made the box, of American Oak. It is truly a gift of Brotherly Love.

This gavel has a lot of stories. A few times Border guards believed it was a weapon. So it was explained that it was for Ceremonial use only.

Other times its holders have arrived at the Border only to remember that they forgot the gavel at home. So there have been a lot of late arrivals.

Look out! If that button pops it could kill somebody. My diet starts Monday.

Minnesota Jobs Daughters

This is John Studell of Minnehaha Lodge in Minneapolis.

John is Grand Master Cook's appointee to the Grand Lodge Progressive line. If tradition prevails John will be the Grand Master in 2017.

I couldn't be happier for John to join the Line. John brings a wealth of personal resources to the Craft: he is a Custodian of the work, John has a brilliant mind, a compassionate heart, and lives Freemasonry. The only question was not if John was going to be appointed to the line but when?

I thank my Supreme Architect for friends like John in my life.

Parades are something that all towns across America love to sponsor. This is a photo of a parade that took place in Alexandria VA last week. Most home town parades have the flags at the front of the parade. Those flags are carried by Policeman, Shriner's, American Legion color guards. I think Alexandria VA and a few other East Coast towns are pretty lucky because they get the Honor Guard -Old Guard to their parade.

This photo was taken by my friend Jeff Egge. He is on loan from the Minneapolis Police department to a Think Tank out there in Washington. Jeff is a Senior DeMolay and he took this photo because he knows how much I love the Masonic Washington Memorial. If you look in the background you will see it.

Every morning Jeff takes the train to work and he passes the memorial on the way to work and gives me a daily update.

The North American Conference of Grand Masters

This is Potentate Thomas Little of Kena Shrine. He received myself and the Minnesota delegation at the Ronald Regan Airport.Illustrious Sir Little welcomed us to his oasis. I have never been so warmly welcomed in my life. I have Thomas pin and i will remember him for a long time.

This is the Legion of Honor of Kena Shrine.I introduced myself as being a proud member of Zuhrah Legion of Honor. When I approached them I noticed that some were highly decorated Veterans. But all were Veterans.....I like this picture alot I'm going to put it in my office.

I did have the opportunity to meet Anthony S Murry. Tony is the International Lt. Commander for the International Association Legions of Honor.
I hope to meet him again at a Imperial and we can discuss legion stuff.

Cyprus has a very interesting situation being a very diverse population and just diverse Masonic recognition situation.
With him is Past Grand Master Thomas Jackson of Minnesota.Most Worshipful Tom is very knowledgeable on the unknown processes for Recognition. He made it very interesting for me. Panjrotis is an economist by trade and I found his thoughts of the future of the value of the Euro. very interesting.

Richard Fletcher of the MSA and past Grand Master of Vermont.Every time I travel to a Grand Lodge he is always there keeping us well informed. Richard is a very interesting man as well. He volunteers at Walter Reed Army Hospital and other military hospitals in the Washington DC area. He shared with me some of his stories.
I was very touched by them. I say a special prayer for Richard and the MSA hospital program. They and our Veterans need our support.

I'm sure you recognize my good friend Chris Hodapp the author of "Freemasons for Dummies" Its always a pleasure for me to see him in person and get caught up on what he is enjoying in life.

AHHHHHHHHHHHH I forgot to ask him....ya know I have purchased over 40 of his books and given them away as gifts. I was going to ask him for a bulk discount.Oh well maybe next time.

The Minnesota delegation had the wonderful opportunity to visit the Washington National Cathedral.Our Grand Lodge Secretary Daughter lives in D.C. and she brought us to this and several other locations in Washington. What a wonderful Tour guide we had.For Security reasons I will not publish her name or photo. But all Minnesota Masons knows her and her wonderful Mother...Dad is ok too.

We had the wonderful fortune of having a very special tour guide of the Cathedral Andy Seferlis. Andy's Father Constantine was a Sculpture and Carver at the Cathedral from 1960 to 1979. So Andy basically grew up in the place. Andy was wonderful because he know every room,stair case, stained glass window and most importantly his lecture of Gargoyles and Grotesques.Which I have many pictures here for you to appreciate.
Walking with Andy I glad I paid attention in my Humanities classes.

I am always apprehensive about driving in this part of the US during the winter because of the legendary storms across the plains. But once you have attended this great get-together, there is no snow or ice that can withstand the warmth and Brotherly love from the Brothers of Nebraska.
It is an environment more like a family reunion than a business meeting. It's a place where Freemasonry is a viable part of their life, just like their family and community.
As I was driving away from the hotel on Saturday, I think that the best way to describe my feelings about the Grand Lodge of Nebraska is captured, and rings so true in the Masonic saying:
"Happy to meet, Sorry to part, Happy to meet again..."

This is the newly elected Most Worshipful Grand Master of Nebraska Masons John T. Parsons. John is a retired military man who has many talents and the time needed to lead the craft in the right direction. Great guy with a common sense approach. John has rolled out a program that will have a very positive impact on the lives of our men and women who are being deployed overseas. I hope to unveil this concept here within the next few months.

This is my Brother and Friend Alvin Benemerito, the new Worshipful Master of Long Pine Lodge. Last year when I met Alvin, I asked him where Long Pine, Nebraska was. He replied, "We are four hours from an airport, three hours from a Walmart, and two hours from a MacDonald's. Alvin then looked at me and said, "Minnesota? You know Frank Harris?" I was shocked -- then I said, "How do you know my Lodge Brother Frank?" Alvin replied, "I belong to Internet Lodge UGLE...we also met in person in England." Small world, huh?

Well, Long Pine Lodge is keeping Freemasonry very much alive in their remote part of the state. It's a Lodge that has only 32 members, but they average over 22 members for meetings. They just raised two Brothers in the last few months. The Lodge does all the ritual work. They are also active in their community. Here is a link to the Lodge website. I think we can all learn a few things from them. It made my trip to be able to see Alvin again and hear what he has been doing.

This is the Potentate of the Tehama Shrine of Nebraska. I had the great pleasure to have lunch with Bob. He is a man I quickly liked and came to respect for many reasons. Bob lives 90 miles from his lodge where he attends very regularly. He is a Rancher and Farmer. You can tell that from his powerful hand shake. He is also a board member of his local Electrical Cooperative.

We had the most stimulating conversation over one of the best fried chicken and mash potatoes lunches I've had in ages. I enjoyed my time with Bob and plan to look him up at the next Shrine that I attend so we can get caught up.

This distinguished gentleman is Brother Cullen Pilker, the Representive from the Grand Lodge of Nebraska to the Grand Lodge of Minnesota. As always, it was a great pleasure to see Cullen again. Cullen drove from his home near Ohama to Grand Island in winter driving conditions to visit Fred Vihovde and me for a few hours. Cullen is a Brother who always has a warm smile, a caring ear and many kind word words to share.

This is my Lodge Brother Fred Vihovde. Fred is the Grand Representive from Minnesota to the Grand Lodge of Nebraska. Fred represents Minnesota very well. He has been to every Annual Communication in Nebraska since 1988. Most importantly we are very proud of Fred, for he is also the National President of the National Sojourners. Fred does an excellent job, no matter if he is cooking dinner with the Eastern Star or putting together a National Convention.

These three very distinguished gentlemen are the Leadership for the Grand Lodge of Iowa. From left to right is William Crawford the Grand Lodge Secretary, Craig Davis the Chairman of Division and Reference, Grand Master Craig Hummel. It was a pleasure to meet again and talk.

This is Brother Jeffrey Coleman, the Senior Warden of Papillion Lodge. Jeff is an Business Analyst for a National Natural Gas provider that keeps us warm up here in Minnesota. When we met, Jeff said "Do you know Marty Olszowka? He is the Secretary of Albert Pike Lodge up in Minneapolis." Marty happens to be on my short list of well-love Brothers! Isn't this a small world? Jeff is married to Marty's Niece and lives in the Omaha area.

This is the Outgoing Grand Master Russell Reno presenting a Grand Masters Membership award to Patrick Barger for being the First Line Signer of 12 new Brothers in the past 12 month! That evening there were many awards presented to the First and Second Line Signers. I had the opportunity to speak with many of them and they were all very humble and expressed their thanks for having the opportunity to do it...

The weather was not the best for traveling. There was light freezing rain and snow on the trip there. Two inches of snow and rain fell during the Communication, and another front of heavy snow was on its way. I left early after breakfast on Saturday. I did stop at two accidents and offered my assistance when I saw a car wreck that had some shaken up folks. I was impressed by the number of snow plows and sand trucks that were out plowing and taking care of the highways for travelers like myself.

The Grand Lodge of Minnesota Bowling Team

The 2010 Dave Lee Gutter Ball was held on January 22 in Brooklyn Park Minnesota. The Grand Lodge put together a six person team to compete in this annual Bowling Tourment to benefit the University of Minnesota Amplatz Children's Hospital.

We bowled four complete games and Trophies were awarded to the top teams...don't worry, we were awarded a prize, and we were not exactly in the top winning bracket. More later.

This is the Grand Master of Minnesota Masons Thomas G. McCarthy being interviewed by Host Dave Lee. It was pretty cool to hear our Grand Master on the radio.

Just in case you're wondering how we did. We took second to last place and won a case of Schlitz beer. We all had good frames and bad.........it was more bad. I am happy to report that I never bowled below 100 and had a personal all time high of 188.

I'm very proud to say that we were able to help such a noble cause such as the University Amplatz Childerns Hospital. Did you know that they are one of the three largest kidney transplant programs in the world that specialize in infants and children? Did you know that they have two floors devoted to treating children for cancer?

I was able to meet and talk with the President Kathie Taranto and I was impressed! Kathie said that it was the goal of the hospital to be recognized as one of the top children's hospitals in the nation. She is sharp and very personable.

That's an effort I'm going to support. But then again why not? That's "Minnesota Excellence."

Art Work From Rite to Ritual

This artwork is the winner of the 2009 Australian Telstra National Indigenous Art Award. The artist is Danie Mellor. It is a large drawing created on paper done with crayon, pencil and glitter pen.
The name of this work is "From Rite to Ritual." This work explores the encounter between the Indigenous people of Australia and the Settler Cultures. The meeting of the two very different cultures takes place in the interior of a Freemasons lodge. This is a comment on the importance of secret and public cermony in both cultures. It also speaks on the differences in spiritual beliefs.
I think you could call it a clash of cultures with similarities.

New Portrait of Geroge Washington to be Unveiled

The George Washington Masonic National Memorial Association has commissioned the painting of a new portrait of George Washington as a Freemason. It was painted by Christopher Erney, an artist from the Alexandria Virginia area.

Chris's first love is sculpture. He has created sculpture for the the US Olympic Team, and the US Treasury. Chris is no stranger to painting George Washington. He spent two years painting a mural the length of four football fields in Alexandria Virginia. This giant mural is a 12-scene montage of George Washington's life. This mural project was designed to replace a ten foot chain length fence to beautify a bike path to cover a controversial electrical generating power plant. Go here for interesting information about the artist and his work.

I am planning on being in attendance at the Conference of Grand Masters when the painting is unveiled on February 22, 2010 celebrating George Washington's 278th birthday. I am looking forward to seeing this new interpretation of Brother Washington. I am hoping that I will be able to return home with a print.

While I am there I am also looking forward to seeing the White House Stone Exhibit. There are fifty stones that will be on display. Each of the stones were marked by the Scottish Masons who helped build the White House in the 1790s. It was during the during the Harry S Truman presidency that they were discovered during the restoration of the White House. Brother Truman sent one stone to each Grand Lodge. The Minnesota Stone will be on display among the others. I am excited because the Minute Book from Edinburgh Lodge #8 will also be displayed.

This Minute Book will provide the the names and marks of the Stone Masons who had gone to America. Matching those names with the Minute Book from Federal Lodge #1 will show the Scottish Masons who formed the First Lodge in Washington DC on the White House grounds. I am expecting to identify the name and Mark of the Mason who marked the Minnesota Stone.

Then I will attempt to create a biographical paper on him.

The Grand Master of Alaska Is Offering You a Free Beer

The Grand Master Of Masons in Alaska, Bo Cline, is busy making home brew beer to offer you a sample at the upcoming Annual Communication of the Grand Lodge of Alaska. Their Annual Communication will be held on Tuesday February 2nd and go to Friday February 5th in Anchorage.

This Grand Master brew is going to be offered in the Hospitality Lounge for those who wish to stop by for a taste. Grand Master Bo has made two types: the one on the right is a India Pale Ale in the making and the on one the left is going to be an Amber.

We meet by the Light of the Full Moon

In the early days, many Masonic lodges used to organize their meeting nights to coincide with the phase of the full moon. This had a lot to do with the fact that transportation was very poor then. Getting from home to lodge was often a problem. Having lodge the same night as a full moon was to help ensure the brothers traveling to and from lodge would have the advantage of the bright moon to aid them in navigating on the rough country roads and footpaths.

As transportation and roads improved, and since many Grand Lodges insisted that lodges meet upon fixed dates, many lodges gave up the old practice.

I understand that there are less than 500 "moon lodges" in the United States today.

My first experience with a "Moon Light Lodge" was a very memorable one. I was making a Grand Lodge visit to Accacia Lodge #51 in Cottage Grove Minnesota. As I was driving to the lodge the moon was big, full and shining brightly over the pine trees. The light of the moon allowed me to see a large jack rabbit and pheasants in a field covered in snow. It was one of those beauitful sub-zero Minnesota nights.

Following the stated meeting and a wonderful dinner, the Worshipful Master and Wardens presented me with a key fob. On the back side all the dates of the full moon were printed on it to help the brothers remember lodge night dates.

So I have added a Moon Phase indicator icon to the blog. This is to aid any brother in planning his Calendar and is reminiscent to the days of Freemasonry before us.
